Can A Yeast Infection Cause Air Bubbles? (3+ Possible Causes & Symptoms To Look Out For)

Share this article:

The leading causes of yeast cell infection include antibiotics, pregnancy, stress, uncontrolled diabetes, and hormonal imbalance. Yeast infection symptoms may include soreness, redness, itching, swelling, irritation during urination, pain during sex, and a whitish discharge.

Are you suffering from yeast infection and wondering if it has a connection to the air bubbles in your vagina? Air bubbles or vaginal gas come when gas gets trapped inside the vagina. You’ll experience a pop and often feel the bubbles whenever sitting, standing, or even walking around.

If the gas causes a louder pop, it may get embarrassing for most of us. Adding yeast infection to this frustrating experience may get confusing.

In most cases, the yeast infection might not cause air bubbles to get trapped down there. Yeast infection is also known as candidiasis. It occurs as a fungus infection in our vagina.

Naturally, our vagina has a small percentage of this fungus and other bacteria. These combinations make a healthy vagina. But when the yeast cells multiply beyond their normal range, you get a yeast infection.

This article looks at the case of yeast infection and air bubbles in the vagina. Does one cause the other? Is there a connection between the two? To answer all these questions, keep reading.

What causes air bubbles, and can a yeast infection cause them?

A young woman is sitting on her bed in a little bit of pain, as she is feeling an air bubbles like feeling from her vagina.

Viginal gas, which causes vaginal bubbles, happens when more oversized gas pockets get trapped in the vagina.

As this gas moves around the vaginal walls, it may cause a flatulence-like like get noticeable as they squeak out.

Anytime something goes into the vagina, gas may get trapped. So if you happen to be a sexually active person, air bubbles in the vagina may not be a cause for alarm.

Some most common causes of vagina gas include:

1. Sexual intercourse

Sexual intercourse involves the movement of the penis in and out of the vagina. As this happens, the air gets trapped inside the vagina.

As the vagina gets aroused, the vagina expands and contracts, trapping air. Anytime the penis or sex toys enter the vagina, you may get air trapped.

When you experience a yeast infection, you might think that it might be causing the air bubbles you experience in the vagina. However, on the contrary, it doesn’t have to be so.

2. Pelvic floor conditions

Some gas instances may be traced back to dysfunctions in the pelvic floor.

Some pelvic floor conditions that may contribute to air being trapped in the vagina include:

  1. Urinary incontinence – The sphincter muscles may weaken, causing an involuntary release of urine. This condition may be highly associated with air bubbles getting trapped in the vagina.
  2. Prolapse of a pelvic organ – Some organs in the pelvis can slip or be dislodged from their position. That may cause it to bulge into the vagina, causing pain, discomfort, or trapped gas.
  3. Fecal incontinence
  4. Weak pelvic muscles caused by the birthing of a child

3. Other possible causes for vaginal gas

Vaginal gas can be caused by other factors that we will only mention briefly.

Even so, these factors are equally threatening and worthy of your attention like those discussed above.

They include:

  • Products meant for feminine hygiene
  • Some stretching exercises
  • Tense cervical muscles
  • Fistula and related conditions
  • Gynecological procedures and exams

So what is a yeast infection?

Yeast infections are caused when bacteria enter into the vagina and multiply rapidly. The resulting increase in vaginal acidity causes irritation, which leads to inflammation.

This can lead to painful intercourse, itching, burning, and discharge. If left untreated, these symptoms can last for months.

Typically a vagina contains many types of bacteria and yeast cells.

When the balance of bacteria and yeast is tempered, an increased multiplication of the yeast cells ensues, causing a yeast infection.

Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Swelling
  • Irritation
  • Rash
  • Soreness
  • Redness
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Whitish discharge
  • Pain during sex

Causes of yeast infection

  • Antibiotics – Some antibiotics kill lactobacillus, the good and harmless bacteria found in the vagina, creating an imbalance that can result in a yeast infection.
  • Pregnancy – Also causes an imbalance in vaginal hormones, discharge, and bacteria.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Weak immune system – A weak immune system makes your body susceptible to all manner of infections, no matter how trivial.
  • Hormonal imbalance – A hormonal imbalance in ladies sets in during pregnancy and the onset of their menstrual cycle. It is then that they may get yeast infections quite quickly.
  • Stress – High-stress levels significantly affect the functionality of our bodies and the hormonal and chemical process happening in them. Ultimately, our bodies are left weaker and catch or develop infections quickly.

So can a yeast infection cause gas?

Given the symptoms we have discussed, we can conclude that it is unlikely for yeast infection causes gas in the vagina or the gut. So if you have gas and a yeast infection simultaneously, they come from different causes and may not be related.

Even so, some causes of yeast infection can separately cause gas. Like pregnancy, besides causing yeast infection is also known to cause gastrointestinal disturbances, which may cause gas.

Stress and a weak immune system can also behave in such a manner.

The table below separately illustrates the causes of vaginal gas and yeast cell infection.

Can a yeast infection cause bloating and gas?

A yeast infection can hardly cause bloating and gas since most or all of its symptoms are witnessed on the sexual organs and hardly anywhere else.

They include soreness, redness, swelling, and itching, among others.

Conclusion

According to the causes and symptoms of yeast infection, we realize that such an infection can hardly cause gas in the body, whether vaginal or abdominal. However, a cause like pregnancy can also cause gastro-intestinal disturbances hence bloating.

So in that instance, both yeast infection and bloating have a common cause, but the two conditions can never be directly linked to each other.
